Grouting It Right

Posted on June 6, 2019

Grout is definitely something you want to take into account when making bathroom remodeling plans. Grout in your bathroom is more important than you may think. If not properly applied, water may seep through and cause expensive damage. Improperly applied grout also looks unsightly and uneven, ruining a floor’s smooth symmetry.

Here are a few tips to follow when working with Grout:

Alignment

Before even beginning the grouting process, you will need to be sure that all your tiles are in perfect alignment and that the spacing is constant and flawless. When you begin grouting, be sure that all tiles are the same height. Uneven tiles can ruin your bathroom remodeling.

Surface preparation

You will want to sand the surface free of irregularities and clean it before applying the grout. This is to ensure a clean finish for when you finish applying grout on the floor.

Sanded or non-sanded

You will have a choice of using either sanded or non-sanded grout for your bathroom remodeling plans. Pick sanded grout when the space between tiles is more than 1/8” and use non-sanded grout for anything smaller than that.  It would also be recommended to use sanded grout if your tiles are made of porcelain, stone, or ceramic.

Filling

If grouting your wall, it would be ideal to use thicker grout, as it is less likely to run down the walls. You also have the choice of using pre-fabricated grout but these will not be as flexible as regular grout.

Sealant

There are some grouts that do not have a sealant. With those kinds, you will need to apply sealant yourself after you finish grouting the room. There are different kinds of sealants to choose from. You must choose a sealant compatible with the grout and tile you have chosen for your bathroom remodeling.
