Kitchen renovations can be as simple as swapping out a few pieces of furniture and slapping on some paint on a few shelves, or it can be a full-blown construction job requiring a small army of workers to finish. Between these two extremes, there are numerous different scenarios with varying degree of complexity, requiring anywhere from two to four people to accomplish. The question you have to ask yourself therefore is whether you can do the entire renovation job by yourself or you need a few extra pairs of hands.
There are benefits and drawbacks to working at it solo, just as there are benefits and drawbacks to hiring a contractor. If you decide to go at it on your own, you can save a considerable amount of money on kitchen renovations. You can then use this money to buy better furniture and nicer fixtures for your kitchen. The drawback is of course that all the work will be yours to tackle, and it can get pretty overwhelming even if the kitchen is fairly small.
Hiring a team of contractors might seem as if it would be the ideal way to go, but there are drawbacks to this as well. While you do have people who will do all the dirty work, you will have to pay a considerable amount of money to get the job done.
When deciding whether or not to go solo, the most obvious consideration is the size of the kitchen. A modestly-sized kitchen might be manageable for one or two people at most, and you should be able to get a good chunk of work done in a couple of weeks even if you only work on the weekends. For larger kitchens that require plenty of lifting or changing out the furniture, hiring a contractor who specializes in kitchen renovations might be the better option.
